         American teacher and author born in New Orleans, Louisiana who died in obscurity by his own hand, becoming posthumously famous on the belated publication of his principle work.

             A comic account of the misadventures of the obese Ignatius J. Reilly, still residing with his mother at thirty, his relationship by correspondence with former college classmate Myrna Minkoff, and his mutually abusive relationship with the world around him. Noted for its vivid portrayal of the main character's (and the author's) home town of New Orleans. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981.
