         American author and teacher born in Atlanta, Georgia, whose fiction was shaped by his painful personal life and family tragedies. Besides The Prince of Tides his best known work is The Great Santini. Married to novelist Cassandra King.

             Chronicles the efforts of protagonist Tom Wingo to aid in his suicidal sister Savannah's recovery by undergoing psychoanalysis on her behalf in order to uncover the memories that haunt her. Adapted to film in 1991 by the author in collaboration with Becky Johnston.
