         English writer born near Bingham, Nottinghamshire, who lived part of his life in New Zealand. A translator of Homer and a literary theorist as well as a novelist. Best known for his satire Erewhon (1872).

             A semi-autobiographical novel attacking Victorian hypocrisy, published posthumously. The story of four generations of the Pontifex family, focusing particularly on father and son Theo and Ernest.
