<- Burroughs, Edgar Rice, 1875-1950.
American author born in Chicago, Illinois. Firmly rooted in pulp fiction, he specialized in proto-science fictional planetary romances and lost race yarns. His novels usually saw magazine serialization a year or more before they were issued in book form; dates given below are of first book publication. Other than the Tarzan books, his Martian novels are his best-known works.
  • <- Tarzan of the Apes. 1914.
Archetypical story of a man raised by animals, and his efforts to reclaim his heritage. The book ends with him halfway there, and is best read in conjunction with Jungle Tales of Tarzan, which explores his youth in more detail, and The Return of Tarzan, which brings the story begun in the first book to a satisfactory resolution. Burroughs' Tarzan is both better and worse than the myriad movie versions; he possesses a power and dignity they lack, but his Africa abounds in fictional species and improbable settings, and if you read very far into the series his adventures grow formulaic. Followed by sequels, The Return of Tarzan (1915), The Beasts of Tarzan (1916), The Son of Tarzan (1917), Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar (1918), Jungle Tales of Tarzan (1920), Tarzan the Untamed (1920), Tarzan the Terrible (1921), Tarzan and the Golden Lion (1923), Tarzan and the Ant Men (1924), Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle (1928), Tarzan and the Lost Empire (1929), Tarzan at the Earth's Core (1930), Tarzan the Invincible (1931), Tarzan Triumphant (1932), Tarzan and the City of Gold (1933), Tarzan and the Lion Man (1934), Tarzan and the Leopard Men (1935), Tarzan's Quest (1936), Tarzan and the Forbidden City (1938), Tarzan the Magnificent (1939), Tarzan and "the Foreign Legion" (1947), Tarzan and the Tarzan Twins (1963), Tarzan and the Madman (1964), Tarzan and the Castaways (1965), and Tarzan: the Lost Adventure (completed by Joe R. Lansdale) (1995).
