<- Bowen, Elizabeth, 1899-1973.
Full name: Elizabeth Dorothea Cole Bowen. Irish novelist, essayist and short story writer born in Dublin who lived and worked in both England and Ireland. Best known for her tales of innocence betrayed in the upper-middle class drawing room (more interesting than it sounds. Really!) and her war stories.
  • <- Death of the Heart. 1938.
Set between the first and second world wars, and concerns Portia Quayne, a teenaged orphan who moves in with the family of her half-brother in London and suffers various romantic entanglements. A keen psychological study readers tend to either love or hate.
