         Birth name: Solomon Bellows. American author born in Lachine, Quebec to Russian Jewish parents and raised in Chicago. Considered one of the foremost novelists of the twentieth century. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1976. Focuses on characters in the midst of personal crises.
  • <- The Adventures of Augie March. 1953.
             Bellow's best-known and arguably greatest novel, the complex and powerful story of a Chicago Jew during the Great Depression.
  • <- Henderson the Rain King. 1959.
             The spiritual quest of Eugene Henderson, a man who travels to Africa and becomes a figure of veneration there due to his supposed ability to bring rain. The protagonist is an amusing parody of Ernest Hemingway, or rather, the stereotype he portrayed himself as.
