Baum, L. Frank, 1856-1919.
Full name: Lyman Frank Baum.
American publisher, playwright and author born in Chittenango, New York. A dabbler in various
fields who found his voice as a writer of children's books. His description of Dorothy's Kansas in
the Oz books stems from a period spent in Aberdeen, South Dakota. His other works are usually in a
vein similar to the Oz books.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. 1900.
A successful attempt to create a particularly American fairy tale, though its impact was
vitiated by too many sequels. Edgier and more complex than the classic 1939 movie based on it.
