         Full name: Margaret Eleanor Atwood. Canadian poet, novelist and writer of children's books, born in Ottawa, Ontario. Married to novelist Graeme Gibson. She tends to focus on problematic or controversial contemporary issues in her fiction.

             A dsytopian novel of a theocratic future in which women are held in subjugation by a totalitarian state, dealing with the experiences of Offred, who as one of the few fertile women is forced to be a birth-mother (or handmaiden) to an infertile upper-class couple.
