         Full name: Jeffrey Howard Archer. English politician and author who took up writing to avoid bankruptcy. His successful literary career has been balanced by a rocky political one. Created a life peer in 1992 and jailed for perjury from 2001-2003. Specializes in epic, complex thrillers featuring frequent plot twists.

             The intersecting life stories of William Kane and Abel Rosnovski, children of privilege and poverty, as they fulfil their respective destinies in twentieth century America. Followed by sequels The Prodigal Daughter (1982) and Shall We Tell the President? (1977), the latter actually an earlier novel revised to fit into the sequence.
