American author of sentimental and sensation fiction (the latter written under the pseudonym A. M. Barnard),
as well as nonfiction. Best known for Little Women and its sequels.

A classic coming-of-age story following the lives of sisters Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March in late
nineteenth century New England, loosely based on those of the author and her own three sisters. Followed
by sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys, the former on the subsequent career of Jo and her husband
as teachers, and the latter on the fates of their students and children.
Frequently adapted to stage and screen; notable are the 1933, 1949, 1978, 1994, 2018 and 2019 film versions, 1981 and
1987 anime TV series, a 1998 opera, and a 2005 musical.
