Week One: Multimedia Focus – Paintings, Photography, and the Museum

W Jan 8           Introduction: What is PWR?  What is Visual Rhetoric? Analyze Stanford photos, Rockwell paintings and photographs; receive Lorde handout for next time!  Student introductions and interviews.  Brainstorm: what is the visual rhetoric of multimedia autobiography?

F Jan 10           First Field Trip:  Meet in Lobby of Cantor Museum for Distinctly American: The Photography of Wright Morris (3-4 pm, with a curator)

 

Week Two: Multimedia Focus – Self-Portraits and Murals

 

M Jan 13         Class topic: More on Self-Portraits and Visual Rhetoric

Reading: “Convergences” handout; Lorde handout (complete page 3); Writing for Real: Preface and chapter 1; register for Coursework, read syllabus

                        Writing: 1) Complete student info/goals sheet 2) Post an introduction on Panfora with your definitions of our key terms 3) Post a REPLY to your introduction and answer question 4 or 5 on p. 11 of Writing for Real 4) Create a Course Binder cover to bring in and show to the class 4) Bring in a self-portrait of yourself (this can be what you use for your part of your course binder cover) and post it on Panfora if possible.

In Class: Share course binder covers, portraits, Lorde article; plasma screen activity on self-portraits
