Tools and Data

I am a user, not a developer of methodology and technique. These page has links to some of the software and techniques that have been useful to me over the years.

For help solving game theory models, GAMBIT is very useful.

For interpretation and presentation of statistical results, check out Gary King's homepage, as well as CLARIFY, a set of software tools he developed with Michael Tomz and Jason Wittemberg. In King's webpage I have made good use of EzI for Ecological Inference problems and AMELIA for imputation of missing data.

Some of the most exciting techniques for work in comparative politics should involve the use of quasi experimental matching.

On matching, check the Persson and Tabellini book, in which each of the chapters presents results with OLS, Heckman selection and matching. You might also want to check Kosuke Imai's webpage. See also the IFPRI evaluation of PROGRESA, the most important current poverty relief effort in Mexico.

Geographic Information Systems are also a great tool. It is not easy to keep up with all the advances and applications. I am particularly interested in applications to poverty relief and poverty mapping.

An easy to use freeware for social network analysis with some clear tutorials is found in the AGNA project. A more powerful program is UCINET 6.

I have not used agent based modelling, but a really neat way to understand the software and modelling community is found at Netlogo. The other really interesting site to visit is Ian Lustick's Political Science - Identity webpage and software.
