Myspace

User Rating

Users: 182,000,000

Demographic: Most popular among teenagers and young adults, Myspace is also gaining popularity in the over-35 market.

Design Issues: Myspace is the mold from which many social networking sites were wrought. As the 5th most-visited website on the entire planet, Myspace's design intuitions have received mounds of flattery in the form of imitation. With a design that has become an icon of its generation, Myspace offers a clean and effective layout for users.

Unfortunately, the clean look of Myspace's default setting is something that its users clearly don't want. It often seems that the majority of Myspace profile pages are completely illegible or ridiculously overrun with flashing GIFs and atrocious layout designs. It must be frustrating for the site creators to see their pleasant design snubbed in favor of loud, ugly, and overwhelmingly bad web design.

Features: Myspace is likely the biggest trendsetter in social networking on the entire Web. The extremely familiar profile/friend/group paradigm is executed on Myspace very well. Users can comment on their friends' profiles and view pictures uploaded by users. Users can blog, add music and videos to their profiles, and list their interests, schools, and activities.

Musicians can create artist profiles, which allow viewers to listen to uploaded songs, keep track of concerts, and more. Most major and up-and-coming artists now have a Myspace page for publicity, and Myspace Music is a great way to find free music to listen to.
