IT Services Wireless Services
Introduction
IT Services offers a managed wireless networking solution. We also offer consulting services with our wireless deployments. Net-to-Jack consultants will help plan out the desired wireless coverage area and deploy wireless access to ensure optimum network performance.
IT Services has added wireless network access for Net-to-Jack Clients. While also offered as a separate service, clients find it beneficial to receive the combined wired and wireless service. This allows IT Services staff to work with the client to understand their network service needs and then deploy the appropriate mix of services. For example, faculty prefer the high speed of wired network service in their offices while students like the mobility of wireless service. Clients that are not Net-to-Jack can get wireless. For more information about this service go to the Net-to-Jack page. For groups that are not Net-to-Jack clients wireless access can be implemented for $31/month per access point. This also includes all of the IT Services resources (security, management, consulting, network monitoring).
Wireless Policies
Wireless access points should only provide service to authenticated Stanford users. They should not allow connections from any other users.
Schools and departments may not allow a third-party provider to supply access on campus without a right-to-enter license.
The 802.11b uses the unlicensed 2.4GHz spectrum, which is used by other wireless devices. Some devices that cause known conflicts include 2.4GHz cordless phones and some microwave ovens. In order to minimize interference and assure the highest level of service to the wireless users, IT Services recommends minimizing the potential interference of other devices by using these devices in areas other than in areas where wireless currently exists.
