Group IMAP Accounts with iPhone 3G

These instructions are for the iPhone 3G. For original iPhones, see original iPhone group IMAP instructions.

Group IMAP accounts require slightly different settings with the Apple iPhone 3G. To set up and access your group IMAP account at Stanford on the iPhone 3G, enter these settings.

Press the Home button to access the Home screen. Then:

  1. Tap the Settings icon.
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Tap Add Account.
  4. Tap Other.
  5. Enter your full name and email address as you would like them to appear on outgoing messages, and your SUNet ID password. You can use the Description field to label the account with a unique identifier, e.g., “Group Mail.”
  6. Tap the Save button in the upper-right corner of the screen to move to the New Account dialog.
  7. IMAP should be selected by default. Scroll down and enter the following values for your Incoming Mail Server:
    • Host Name: group-accounts.pobox.stanford.edu
    • User Name: Your SUNet ID
    • Password: This field is pre-populated with your SUNet ID password from step 5.
  8. Scroll down and enter the following values for your Outgoing Server:
    • Host Name: smtp-roam.stanford.edu
    • User Name: Your SUNet ID
    • Password: Your SUNet ID password
  9. Tap the Save button in the upper-right corner of the screen. Mail will verify your account settings and return you to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars configuration screen.
  10. Tap your new account.
  11. Scroll down and tap Advanced.
  12. Scroll down; in the IMAP Path Prefix field, enter: group
  13. Verify the following Incoming Settings:
    • Use SSL: ON
    • Server Port: 993
You can also choose to store special folders on the IMAP server using the Mailbox Behaviors settings on this screen.
  14. Return to the configuration screen for your account by tapping the button in the upper-left corner of the screen. Scroll down to Outgoing Mail Server and tap SMTP.
  15. Tap the entry for smtp-roam.stanford.edu and verify the following settings:
    • Use SSL: ON
    • Server Port: 465

When finished, press the Home button and tap the Mail icon to test your settings. If you entered anything incorrectly you may receive a generic error message. Check your settings or try re-entering your password (the source of most errors).
