Managed Virtual Server

IT Services offers managed virtual servers as an alternative to hosting or managing physical servers. This service takes advantage of virtualization technology to host multiple virtual servers, each of which functions as a complete and independent server, on a single physical server.

Features and benefits

There are a number of benefits for clients in using virtual servers:

  • Provisioning of a virtual server is much faster than a physical server, since servers are pre-configured by IT Services.
  • Virtual servers can be moved from one physical server to another with no downtime.
  • Virtual servers are less expensive over time, than leasing and hosting a physical server in the IT Services Data Centers.
  • Virtual servers use less power and cooling, enabling better hardware resource utilization in the data center and supporting University sustainability efforts.

This service is presently available only for public data—not prohibited, restricted, and confidential data— as defined by the Information Security Office. IT Services is working on a service to support non-public data.

Cost

Rates for the Managed Virtual Server service are published on the Computing Services Rates page.
