How to Use Caller I.D. Features

Caller I.D. Number Display Feature

If you subscribe to the Caller ID feature, the telephone system will allow you to see the phone numbers of calls coming into your phone when a Caller ID box or display phone is connected to your line and the incoming caller has given permission for their number to be displayed. IT Services does not provide the equipment that displays the incoming caller's number. (Caller ID boxes are available at local electronics stores for $15 - $30.) For instructions on how to use your display equipment, consult the manufacturer's documentation.

Caller I.D. Blocking Features

When a Stanford telephone subscriber signs up for service, he or she has the options to allow or not allow their phone number to be displayed on off-campus Caller ID boxes and display phones. If you choose not to allow your number to display, then your Caller ID setting is "blocked" (this is the default selection). If you choose to allow your number to display, then your setting is "unblocked". You can override the Caller ID setting of any Stanford telephone by following the procedures below.

To Override the "Blocked" Setting for a Single Call

Dial * 8 2 ...

You hear three beeps followed by dial tone. You can immediately dial the number you want to reach and your call will be sent out with its Caller ID information.

To Override the "Unblocked" Setting for a Single Call

Dial * 6 7 ...

You hear three beeps followed by dial tone. You can immediately dial the number you want to reach and your call will be sent out without its Caller ID information. Note: This code also works for calls made to on-campus numbers.

Call Waiting Caller I.D. Feature

An optional enhancement feature, Call Waiting Caller ID adds to Inbound Caller ID the ability to see the phone numbers of people who are calling when you're on the phone. The feature requires that you have Call Waiting, Caller ID, and a display phone or Caller ID box that is compatible with this feature (some boxes are not).

Note: If you use the Cancel Call Waiting feature (* 6 1), inbound Caller I.D. information will not be displayed.
