A chime can be installed on an existing jack outlet to be associated with a particular directory number (i.e., telephone line) or telephone set. Calls directed to this number/line activate the chime.

A chime that is installed strategically in a work area with many different phones can make it easier for staff to know when a particular line is ringing.
