Telephone Services for Faculty and Staff

The Stanford telephone system serves the core campus, student residences, medical center, and a number of off-campus Stanford and affiliate buildings. Payphones, “blue tower” emergency phones, and some critical backup lines are provided by AT&T, the local utility provider.

More about the Stanford Phone System

The Stanford telephone system is extensive: it accommodates more than 40,000 lines (phone numbers). The system’s size gives the University considerable leverage to negotiate low rates with outside providers. However, it is still a PBX (Private Branch Exchange), separate from the surrounding AT&T managed utility – that’s why users must dial “9” to establish an outside connection at the beginning of every non-Stanford call. Even emergency calls must be dialed “9-911” to reach the emergency switchboard directly.

New: Voice over IP (VoIP) —limited availability—

VoIP service is available now in locations where the building network has been connected to the VoIP backbone. For more information, see voip.stanford.edu.
