TechPort Instructions for Registered Users
To use the 1,500+ courses and over 6,000 online books at TechPort:
- Go to techport.stanford.edu.
- Click Login. (You will need to go through Stanford WebAuth.)
- Click Yes when you are asked to grant permission to SkillSoft.
- At the remote TechPort site: Click Catalog at the top of the screen to view the course offerings. (You can drill down through the categories or use the Search feature.)
- When you have located a course you wish to take, click Add to My Plan, and then Submit on the page that follows (the page at which you can set a completion date). Next time you want to access that course, you can go directly to My Course Plan and launch it from there.
- The first page you see when you launch a course is the Course Map page. It lists the topics, the types of instruction, and shows which units you done work in.
- If you are not sure which units to take in a course, select Take Course Test. The test results should help you determine where you need instruction.
- The Course Map page lets you to pick which units to take in which order.
- To take the whole course, click Start Course.
- If you have problems launching a course, go to the FAQs.
- Many courses offer Mentoring. To access this real-time assistance from subject-matter experts, click Ask My Mentor at the top of the screen when you are working in a course. These experts can be reached 24x7 via a chat room or email.
- If your Internet connection is slow, you can download the course to your hard drive and play it from there.
- For help navigating within a course or using the TechPort interface, click the Quick Reference Guide link located on the left in the Shortcuts area.
- To view your history -- courses accessed and tests taken -- click the My Progress Report link in the Shortcuts area.
- When your training session is over: It is always best to log out by clicking the Log Out link located at the top-right of the screen, rather than just closing the browser window.
Training Sessions
If you would like some help familiarizing yourself with the TechPort offerings, sign up for an Open Labs on how to access and use the TechPort site.
In the Open Labs, which are scheduled about once a month, you can work at Windows computers away from your busy office, and there will be knowledgeable staff present to help you out. To sign up for these cost-free sessions, go to STARS via Axess.
