The Tech Express

Overview

The Tech Express is a series of user-friendly brown-bag sessions on computing at Stanford. These sessions, mainly held on Thursdays from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M and led by knowledgeable IT Services staff or other IT professionals, are intended to meet the needs of Stanford staff, but are open to everyone, including faculty and students. No registration is required – come by and learn something new! Bring your lunch! Bring your questions!

Tech Express sessions are held in Turing Auditorium (Polya Hall, Room 111).

The success of these sessions depends on you! Questions from attendees are strongly encouraged. Topics are announced in advance through the techexpress mailing list and on this web page.

Feel free to contact the Tech Express coordinator with your questions or suggestions. Call 723-4391 or send email to techtraining@stanford.edu.

Stanford Desktop Tools

This week's session will focus on the new versions of Stanford Desktop Tools. Some improvements have been made to the offering and we'll be covering that and the process of moving off of PC-Leland and MacLeland.

Everyone on campus needs to move off of PC-Leland and MacLeland prior to April 2008.

BigFix Power Management

BigFix software is already found on most Windows computers on campus. Using the Stanford Power Management Tool with BigFix, you can reduce your carbon footprint, save energy, and even be eligible to participate in a PG&E rebate program. Each computer participating in the program is eligible for a $15 rebate. Rebate money will be distributed to the schools & departments to use to support other Sustainable IT efforts, including replacing CRT's with flat-panel monitors or, replacing power-heavy tower computer systems with more energy-efficient ones.

Even if your department is not participating, you can still opt to participate on your own by downloading the Power Management Tool. Alternately, you may want to convince your console operator to have the department participate. Every little bit counts!
