The Summer Tech Express
(formerly the Thursday Technology Brown Bags)

Introduction

summer tech express

The Tech Express is a series of user-friendly brown-bag sessions on computing at Stanford. These sessions, held from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M and led by knowledgeable ITSS staff, are intended to meet the needs of Stanford staff, but are open to everyone, including faculty and students. No registration is required – come by and learn something new! Bring your lunch! Bring your questions! Drinks and cookies provided.

This summer, the Tech Express returns to Pigott Hall (Building 260, Room 113). Building 260, also called the Language Corner, is in the southeast corner of the Main quad, kitty-corner from the Clock Tower.

The success of these sessions depends on you! Questions from attendees are strongly encouraged. Topics are announced in advance through the techexpress mailing list and on this web page.

Feel free to contact the Tech Express coordinator with your questions or suggestions. Call Phyllis Olrich at 725-1541 or send email to techexpress-owner@lists.stanford.edu.

Summer Tech Express Schedule 2003
(Fall schedule will be published after September 18)

July 17 and
August 7

The Forsythe mainframe computer will be taken out of service in December 2003. There are still about 6,200 active accounts on the Forsythe mainframe. We have no way to provide individual help for most of these accounts. We need you to do everything you can to evaluate your situation, migrate your own data and email, and close your account. John Klemm (7/17) and Susan Plass (8/7) will review the basics of how to take those steps.

August 21

Sundial is the Stanford-wide calendar project that will for the first time give the entire University a common web-based calendar system. This fully featured calendaring service will be centrally maintained; available to all departments and individual users; and capable of tracking individual, group, event, and resource schedules. Come to this session to learn more about this exciting new project!

August 28

In this "bonus" Tech Express, Mark Branom will show you how to use the Mailing List Services available at lists.stanford.edu. An email list (also called "mailing list" or "email distribution list") lets you send a piece of email to a single email address (the address of the list), and the email is then forwarded as email to all the email addresses in the list. Learn how easy it is to use this web-based service as a replacement for the Forsythe EMS Distributions Lists that you may have been using.

September 18

Do any of the following questions sound familiar?

  • I've been hearing a lot about "information security" – what's all the hue and cry about?
  • What is the "Security Awareness program?"
  • Someone said that Information Security Services is scanning computers all over campus – isn't that a violation of my privacy?
  • Stanford has ten's of thousands of computers on a very open network – doesn't that mean we can't be secure?
  • Doesn't more or better information security mean that getting my computer work done will be harder, or even impossible to do?

If these and other similar questions are on your mind, come to this session and get your questions answered. Tina Darmohray, of Information Security Services, will provide an update on programs and activities, as well as explain the value of security facilities that we all can use. Get YOUR questions answered. Download the PowerPoint presentation here.
