The Tech Express

Overview

The Tech Express is a series of user-friendly brown-bag sessions on computing at Stanford. These sessions, held Thursdays from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M and led by knowledgeable ITSS staff or other IT professionals, are intended to meet the needs of Stanford staff, but are open to everyone, including faculty and students. No registration is required – come by and learn something new! Bring your lunch! Bring your questions! Drinks and cookies provided.

Tech Express sessions are held in Turing Auditorium (Polya Hall, Room 111).

The success of these sessions depends on you! Questions from attendees are strongly encouraged. Topics are announced in advance through the techexpress mailing list and on this web page.

Feel free to contact the Tech Express coordinator with your questions or suggestions. Call 723-4391 or send email to techexpress-owner@lists.stanford.edu.

Using Open Source Software and Other Freebies (a.k.a. Alternatives to MS Office)

Do you wish you had office applications at home? Is your department running out of funds because you're spending too much on licensing fees for tools like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access? Come to this Tech Express as our instructor, Mark Branom, demonstrates Open Source and other free alternatives. Topics will include OpenOffice.org, Google Docs and Spreadsheets, and Google Page Creator.

Power Googling: Getting What You Want from Google

Google is easy to use, but the more you know about how it works, its features, its capabilities, and how it displays results, the better it can serve your needs. Nancy Blachman, author and developer of Google Guide (www.googleguide.com), will show you how to go beyond Google's deceptively plain interface. You will learn: to select terms and search more effectively; how Google interprets your query; what's included with your results; and how Google works.

iTunes at Stanford

Stanford on iTunes provides access to a wide range of Stanford-related digital audio and video content via the iTunes Music Store, Apple’s popular music jukebox and online music store. The project includes two sites:

  • a public site which includes Stanford faculty lectures, learning materials, music, sports, and more!
  • an access-restricted site for Stanford affiliates delivering course materials, academic computing help, HR Training sessions, and more!
