Tech Briefings
Timely Info for Power Users and Stanford's Technology Support CommunityOn this page:
Overview
Held Friday afternoons in Turing Auditorium, Tech Briefings are informal, interactive seminars on computer-related topics of interest to the Stanford community. These sessions are intended for power users, Expert Partners, and those with IT responsibilities, but are open to everyone - faculty, staff, and students. The Tech Briefings, led by knowledgeable ITSS staff or other IT professionals, run from 2:00 to 3:30 P.M. No registration is required - just come on by and learn something new. No fees. No fuss.
Turing Auditorium is Room 111 of Polya Hall. See this map to Polya Hall.
The success of these sessions depends on you! Questions from attendees are strongly encouraged. Topics are announced in advance through the techbriefings mailing list and on this web page.
Because we are presenting emerging technical topics, please feel free to contact the Tech Briefing coordinator with any questions, comments, suggestions, or concerns. Call 723-4391 or send email to techbriefings-owner@lists.stanford.edu.

Understanding the New Mailman List Service IT Services is happy to present a new feature-packed mailing list service called Mailman to replace Majordomo. In addition to numerous new features including spam filtering, fully moderated lists, and list archiving with an integrated web interface, the Mailman package also delivers much better performance and reliability. If you want to know what this means to you as a list owner and/or list member, then attend this Tech Briefing. You'll learn how to do the same things with Mailman that you're doing currently with Majordomo, and we'll also talk about the migration of your lists from Majordomo to Mailman. See http://mailman.stanford.edu for more info. Also download the PowerPoint slide presentation from today's talk. |

| July 28 | Supporting PDAs at Stanford PDAs at Stanford are a large and rapidly growing support challenge. Several types of handheld devices are widespread on campus and are becoming more and more integrated into the way many faculty, staff, and students get their work done. At the same time, the marketplace is rapidly changing and the technology itself is not yet mature, so support is and is likely to remain challenging for the foreseeable future. Come to this Tech Briefing to learn about a new web site, http://pda.stanford.edu, created by IT Services to assist the support community with this effort. The goal is simple: to share what we have with the support community, and provide a venue for the support community to share what they have with each other and with us. On the site you'll find, for instance, a blog where we welcome your thoughts, your hard-won tips and tricks, your questions for all. As of now, there's just one blog that has been set up, and we'd like your input on how we should develop this. There is also a link for Documents & Downloads. Like many of you, some of our staff have developed their own documentation for internal use. We've taken some of ours and made it available here. We invite you to share yours; for now, just put in a comment on the blog that you have something you'd like to make available, and we'll get in touch. We also strongly encourage you to try out and comment on the documents and other resources you find on the site. Please let us know what you think of this site – both as a resource for you in your efforts to support PDAs in your groups, and as a type of community support effort that we might expand on. And come to this Tech Briefing to learn the latest about PDAs on campus and to network with other people in the technology support community. |
