Requesting a Department Printer
Setting up a "department printer" allows you to print information from the Unix-Spires system directly to your networked laser printer. This may give you better output results than by printing through Samson to an attached printer.
Requirements
Department printers must be laser printers connected to the Stanford network via TCP/IP.
Requesting a Department Printer
To set up a Department Printer, submit a HelpSU request with the following information:
- DNS name of your printer as registered in NetDB.
- Printer type (e.g., HP Laserjet 4000).
- Whether it is a postscript or non-postcript printer.
- Your location (e.g. Bldg. 120, Room 355).
- Contact name: The person responsible for local network administration in your building.
- Printer name: This is the destination code that will be your printer's "name" as recognized by Spires; for example, DSG2, COMM1, HUMBIO, etc. The name can be no longer than eight alpha-numeric characters. IT Services will try its best to accommodate the printer with the name you choose, however, the name must be unique. Therefore, you may want to consider an alternate name in case your preferred name is already taken.
- Whether to include separator pages (cover sheets that label output by Spires account).
