Plans for Pubsw Changes

To request any software packages be installed or upgraded, please submit a HelpSU request. There is no need to request changes already listed on this web page unless the stated time frame is too slow for your needs or you think that one of our plans should be higher priority.

The upcoming changes on this page are divided into major projects (which will require substantial work and/or will have significant user-noticeable impact), minor projects affecting software already installed, and new software packages that have been requested.

Major Projects

  • We're in the process of automating builds for all installed packages, and at the same time building all packages on Linux (many of the less commonly-used ones are not yet available there) and upgrading to the latest available version. This is a major effort and will be ongoing for probably more than a year.

The following packages remain to be done, broken down by category.

Development: bwbasic, eiffel, f2c, forth, lam, sapp, scm, sfio, snobol

    Doc: examples, learn, misc

    Fonts: fonts, hbf

Graphics: mpeg_lib, povray, xaos, xfractint, xmountains

    Licensed: gqopt, npsol, uasm

    Local: fetchmail, passwd_change, sweetfinger

    Mail: metamail, movemail, mpack, premail

    Network: bind, irc, kermit, ntalk

Sound: nas, workman, xcdplayer, xmcd, xplaygizmo

    Text: glimpse, mpp

    Web: excite, sgml, vrweb

X: asclock, ctwm, cxterm, dxpc, enlightenment, hanterm, hexcalc, kterm, lwm, openstep, rxvt, snftobdf, toolbar, unclutter, vtwm, xalarm, xapplaunch, xautolock, xcb, xchrom, xclosedown, xdaliclock, xdm, xfed, xkeycaps, xmove, xpostit+, xpostit, xpt, xshowcmap, xtar, xview, xvtdl

Note that each of these are packages that have to be dealt with in some fashion. We may not choose to upgrade all of these packages; some of them may be retired in favor of newer packages or just no longer supported depending on how widely used they are by the Stanford community.

  • All locally-written software should be imported into CVS, and locally-maintained scripts should be collected together into the Local/scripts package. For Perl scripts, man pages should be integrated into the script as POD documentation and man pages generated automatically from POD when the package is installed. This project is ongoing and will likely take a year or so to complete.

  • The info directory file in /usr/pubsw/info/dir hasn't been kept up-to-date with the newly installed info files. The right way to handle this file is to generate it automatically using install-info, but install-info will need to be given a few options for those info pages that don't have the proper magic directory entry bit in them. A driver script should be written to do this.

Requested Software

  • Cantera: a package to solve problems involving chemically-reacting flows.

  • The WindowMaker X window manager.

  • A Unix Samba client to mount SMB file shares (specifically of interest for Linux).

  • xdiff, a graphical interface for diff. This package requires that Qt be installed.

  • ptkdb, a Perl debugger with a PerlTK interface.

  • GSL, the GNU Scientific Library, a library of numerical routines for C and C++ programmers. Installing this package requires a GCC upgrade.

  • A linux compile of the EPIC4 irc client, or alternately a build of the standard IRC2 client (which supports ICB).

  • GNU TeXmacs, a free scientific text editor inspired by TeX and GNU Emacs.

  • Antiword, a command line utility to read MS Word files as formatted ASCII text.

  • Glasgow Haskell, a functional programming language.

  • Network Simulator provides support for simulation of TCP, routing, and multicast protocols over wired and wireless (local and satellite) networks.

  • Eclipse, an IDE primarily for Java but with support for various other languages as well.

  • The BIND tools need an update to BIND 9.

  • FastCap and FFTCap for computing the self and mutual capacitances of a conductive tridimensional structure sunk in a dielectric, possibly discontinuosus, mean.

  • Mono for compiling C# programs.

Retiring Software

These software packages are slated for retirement during the next quarter break. Executables for these packages are being tracked for usage information. If you would like to see us retain or upgrade one of these packages, please file a HelpSU ticket.

Web/vrweb

This package is no longer maintained and it's doubtful anyone uses this package.

X/lwm

A minimalistic window manager. It is doubtful anyone uses this package.

X/xchrom

A clock that uses colors to indicate time. It is doubtful anyone uses this package.

X/xmove

Utility to move windows from one X server to another. It is doubtful anyone uses this package.

X/xvtdl

To Do List manager that uses the XView Toolkit. It is doubtful anyone uses this package.
