In addition to the pubsw software tree offered in AFS, ITSS also provides a variety of stow packages for installation on individual systems. We recommend that these stow packages be used for constantly-running production services that don't otherwise require AFS, rather than using libraries and executables directly out of pubsw. This way, one can avoid introducing an unnecessary AFS dependency and delays from using a network file system, and the local system administrator can be in complete control of when software packages are upgraded.
For those not familiar with stow, these are compressed tar files that contain the compiled version of the software, laid out in the normal bin/sbin/man/lib structure. GNU Stow is a Perl script for managing packages in this format, and for Stanford users is installed as /usr/pubsw/bin/stow. You can obtain a copy from ftp.gnu.org.
To install any of these packages, see the stow package installation instructions.
The following stow packages are currently available:
Stow packages for a local installation of Perl. This is build of Perl
5.6.1 compiled to look first in /usr/local/lib for add-on
modules and then look in /usr/pubsw/lib. We also provide both
a stub site-perl package that you can use as a base for installing
local modules and a site-perl package including the modules needed for
querying the Stanford directory servers.
Stow packages for the OpenLDAP libraries and command-line tools, used to query the Stanford directory servers. These packages are needed by both Perl programs that use Stanford::Directory and by WebAuth web servers and include all of the other libraries that OpenLDAP also depends on.
