Description
GNU coreutils is a package containing a variety of basic system, file, and text processing utilities. It is the combination of the old textutils, fileutils, and sh-utils packages. Most of these programs have significant advantages over their Unix counterparts, such as greater speed, additional options, and fewer arbitrary limits.
Programs included in this package are: [, cat, chgrp, chmod, chown, cksum, comm, cp, csplit, cut, date, dd, df, dircolors, du, echo, env, expand, expr, factor, fmt, fold, head, install, join, ln, ls, md5sum, mkdir, mkfifo, mknod, mv, nl, od, paste, pathchk, pinky, pr, printf, ptx, rm, rmdir, seq, sleep, sort, split, sum, tac, tail, touch, tr, tsort, unexpand, uniq, and wc.
hostid is installed on HP-UX and Linux, where that utility isn't always available. users and yes are installed for IRIX and Solaris, which don't always have those utilities. printenv is also installed for Solaris, which doesn't have it available natively as a separate utility, as is id, since the default Solaris id is completely non-compliant with POSIX.
