Net-to-Jack

The net-to-jack model is not available for adoption today, but continues to be supported in some locations. Departments looking for internal and external network infrastructure support are directed now to the Net-to-Switch service.

Overview

Fast, reliable network access has become increasingly important to research and instruction, and to the administrative applications which run the daily business of the University. As the need for highly reliable network access has grown, support of existing network infrastructure and planning for the future has become increasingly complex.

The Net-to-Jack program is a centralized service model with full, end-to-end support for internal and external network infrastructure. In the past, most departments provided their own support for internal network infrastructure (connectivity and routing/switching equipment within a building) or paid for third-party support. External network support and infrastructure, (connectivity out from a building to the SUNet backbone and the Internet) was provided by IT Services. The Net-to-Jack program combines these two support functions into one service profile, providing academic and administrative departments with highly reliable network equipment and centralized, expert monitoring and support at a cost-effective price.

Services Provided

Through the Net-to-Jack program you get:

  • A local area network (LAN) infrastructure audit. IT Services performs an initial inventory of your department's local area network equipment and connections. The audit identifies any equipment in need of upgrade or replacement. IT Services will assume support of your network equipment and replace it when needed, at no additional cost.
  • Up-to-date network equipment. IT Services will fund new network equipment required to bring the departmentıs network up to the current standard. For locations being added that do not have network equipment, IT Services will fund the purchase.
  • Highly reliable network service. Net-to-Jack provides 10/100 Mbps switched Ethernet connectivity to each active TSO (Telecommunications Service Outlet, also referred to as a port/jack). This includes connectivity from the TSO through the campus network to the Internet.
  • 24/7 equipment monitoring and maintenance. IT Services monitors network equipment 24/7, and will diagnose and repair equipment problems or failures that affect an entire network or subnet as they occur. IT Services will address problems with individual ports at the start of the next business day.
  • Local changes. Your department can use the same procedures for adding, moving, or changing network services as they do with other IT Services services. IT Services technicians will perform these tasks and assure network records are kept up-to-date. (For more details on this procedure, see Information for Department IT Contacts.)
  • Network management and infrastructure planning. IT Services replaces and upgrades network equipment as necessary. Typically, network equipment is replaced due to obsolescence or failure every three to five years.
  • Periodic reporting. IT Services utilizes sophisticated network analysis software to monitor and balance network load. Detailed monthly billing statements provide departments with the information they need to verify services and keep costs down.
  • Wireless networking. The Net-to-Jack program bundles wireless networking for particular applications at a ration of up to one wireless access point for 16 ports covered. Additional access points are available, for a monthly charge (see Program Costs, below). For security reasons, the wireless network is an additional network, separate from the department's main network.

Optional Services

Optional Net-to-Jack services include:

  • Critical jack service. For an additional fee, IT Services can provide 24/7 monitoring and service for ports which support servers or other critical functions within an organization. The critical jack service is managed by a change management system to allow precise tracking and reporting of authorized changes by the client. Also included is a scanning tool called NMAP that provides a critical level of port monitoring and reporting to the client.

Program Costs

Net-to-Jack program charges are calculated at a flat rate, per jack, per month. Fees are billed to the department on a monthly basis, and will appear on the monthly statement from IT Services. Current charges are:

Network Problem Reporting

To report network problems, submit a help request at http://helpsu.stanford.edu or call the Stanford IT Help Desk at 725-HELP(4357).

After hours or on weekends . . .

Report network problems to the Stanford IT Help Desk at 5-HELP and press 3. IT Services staff will record your problem and create a trouble ticket for assistance for the following business day.

Critical jack program . . .

Report problems affecting a critical network service to the Stanford IT Help Desk at 725-HELP(4357) and press 3. Be sure to specify that the problem affects a service covered by the critical jack program. Repair personnel will be dispatched 24/7.
