Computing Services Rates
Facilities Rate Definitions
- By Rack Unit: This is the charge for servers using shared rack space. Cost is based on the actual number of rack units used by the server. Server installation and special power hookup are not included in the rate. Rate includes monthly cost for standard space and power usage.
- By Square Foot: This is blocked space that is either managed by the client or managed by IT Services Shared Services staff. Rate includes standard power consumption, specialized facilities, environmental monitoring, and Production Control Group support for system monitoring and incident resolution.
- By Full Rack: Beginning in FY09, full racks will be charged by rack unit. There are two sizes of racks, those which support 20 rack units of equipment, and those which support 31, assuming standard rack-mounted equipment. Rate includes monthly cost for standard space and power usage. The total costs for a full rack are as follows:
- 20RU Rack: $640.00 (non general funds); $525.00 (general funds)
- 31RU Rack: $992.00 (non general funds); $813.75 (general funds)
SAN Block Storage Rate Definitions
- High Performance: This constitutes the most reliable, flexible, and expensive storage platform offered by our storage vendors. Hardware that is in this category is highly redundant, and therefore more complex to administer. The reliability of high-end storage is due to built-in advanced fault tolerance and faster more reliable fibre-channel drives. This is typically used for high-transaction environments such as online transaction databases.
- Medium Performance: Storage devices in this group do not have the very high availability combined with performance requirements of the high-end storage devices, but can be flexible and provide a similar level of performance as the high-end storage. "Medium" storage can use the same fibre-channel drives used by high-end SAN, as well as the same dedicated Fiber Channel infrastructure; however, costs are kept low by using larger SATA drives and NAS when possible. This storage does not have the same degree of fault-tolerance, and single failures in the system can manifest in temporary drops in performance.
- Low-Cost Central Storage: Storage devices in this group are significantly cheaper and generally provide lower levels of performance and reliability. The low-end storage has many of the features available in mid-tier storage but uses SATA drives and lower cost IP based infrastructure (NAS). File protocols include (but are not limited to) AFS, CIFS, and iSCSI.
- Backup, Recovery, and Data Protection: The backup service utilizes a robust enterprise class system (IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager, or TSM) and includes two copies. A local copy on disk or tape and an offsite copy on tape (shipped daily by Iron Mountain). Typical retention is 90 days, with seven versions, however, retention options can vary and compression, encryption, and archive volumes are available.
Unix/Linux Rate Definitions
- Non-Standard O/S or Hardware: This rate applies to machines which are running operating system versions or using hardware which is not on our supported list.
