IMAP Email

IT Services supports IMAP email on the campus mail systems. Stanford community members can choose between POP and IMAP for their @stanford email.

What is IMAP

  • IMAP = Internet Message Access Protocol
  • an email service of IT Services
  • a service that stores all your email on a central IT Services-managed server, giving you access to all your messages, old and new, at work, at home or anywhere a web browser is available (web access through the IMAP interface for Webmail).
  • a service available to faculty, students, and staff
  • a service you can choose to use with your current favorite email program, such as Eudora or Outlook Express, simply by making some basic changes to the program anytime you want
  • a service that (with some limitations and additional cost) supports group accounts, which let multiple users access the email in a single mailbox, each using his or her own SUNet ID and password
  • Is IMAP right for me? - basic decision points
  • Tell me details... - to help me decide whether or not to use IMAP

Start me up with IMAP!

  1. Check requirements and restrictions: Is IMAP right for me? and Tell me details... - information you should know before starting
  2. Configure your email program for IMAP and/or learn how to use Webmail.
  3. Spend a few minutes with our guide Your First Day with IMAP
