Frequently Asked Questions — TSOs, Phone Jacks, Network Jacks

Service Overview

TSOs (Telecommunication Service Outlets) are the wall plates in offices/rooms that have voice, data, and CATV connection ports on them for plugging in phones, modems, FAXes, Computers, TVs and other similar devices. Standard TSOs have 2 voice ports and 2 data ports -however- the actual compliment of voice, data, CATV, fiber ports varies somewhat based on type of office/room, department, and other client profile definitions. TSOs are typically installed during new building construction, major renovations, or individually as departments activate more voice/data services in buildings.

Cost of Service: Costs for TSOs vary depending on type, building, and other factors. Costs will be supplied either by IT Services CNS Facilities Engineering or a CAM-Service Manager.

Turn around time of request: Single TSOs up to 3-4-5 at a time can usually be coordinated within 1-2 weeks. New Bldgs and Major Bldg Renovations require coordination with construction schedules requiring planning and timing elements as with all other activities within the construction/renovation scope of work.

Required information from client: Whether a single TSO or hundreds of TSOs, clients must specify the exact location in a building for each TSO, the desired port profile if other than 2-voice 2-data, an account number for billing, statement of when the TSO installation is needed, and other information as requested.

Ticket writing instructions for this service: Example: Julie Hardin, Construction Services Mgr, needs approximately 15 new TSOs installed in Meyer Library 3rd Floor Room 333, target date April-15-2002, call Julie @ 5-9205.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the standard TSO used on campus?
Standard TSOs have 4-ports on the faceplate, typically 2 voice ports and 2 data ports. Current wiring standards no longer designate the ports as voice/data so that any of the 4 ports can be used for either voice or data as needed. There are many styles of TSOs in campus buildings given the constant evolution of wiring standards over the past 17 years since Stanford installed it's own PBX. TSOs range from single port "home-style" to large 25-pair legacy cables from the 50s-60s-70s that have special (and bulky) adapters on them.

  2. What if I need cable TV service in my office/classroom/conference room?
IT Services provides both a CATV and fiber port on TSOs installed in classrooms and conference/meeting rooms. Private offices may have a CATV port added to the faceplate at the request of the client.

  3. Do I need to leave my office to have a new TSO installed?
Many times a new TSO in an occupied office can be installed with minimal intrusion, however, it is best to allow from 1-2 hours for technicians to work within your room without you being there or able to use your office work space. Usually 1 hour is sufficient for most TSO installs in your actual work space.

  4. Who can tell me if a TSO can be placed where I want it?
A CAM Service Manager can visit your office and discuss details with you.
