Frequently Asked Questions — Fiber Feeds

Service Overview

The use of fiber for network and other technology deployment is commonplace on the Stanford campus. SUNet is delivered over a fiber system that connects each network switch to the campus backbone. Fiber is also used for specialty service deployment in or between buildings that are separate from SUNet or other campus/IT Services managed network systems. Fiber installation can be managed by IT Services to meet a variety of needs once identified by a client.

Cost of Service: Costs for fiber placement/use will vary based on the specific request by a client, however, basic pricing for using in-place fiber from IT Services is $615 activation per fiber pair and $100/month per pair.

Turn around time of request: Providing fiber service to clients can be as quickly as within 1-2 weeks to multiple weeks depending on what is being requested. The IT Services Project Consultant assigned to work with a client will provide specifics.

Required information from client: Do you want multi-mode or single-mode? How many pairs of each? Origin and termination (point A and point B) of the 2 locations being connected, account number paying for activation/monthly fees, target date needed and other information as requested by the CAM Service Manager assigned to work with the client.

Help Desk Specialist: If the question is not listed below, please route a HELPSU ticket to: Order Management

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who owns the fiber I will be using?

Typically IT Services-CNS owns all fiber distribution facilities connecting the campus communication centers, nodes, head-ends, building MDF/IDFs. Special installations that will be used only by the client with no residual benefit to the general fiber distribution media on-campus and other campus clients, could be owned and managed by the client paying IT Services for the installation of separate fiber facilities.

  2. What other charges may be involved with having IT Services place fiber for me?

If fiber runs between buildings and in some cases within a building, there will be a duct space usage charge for having client owned fiber run through IT Services owned/maintained conduit. The IT Services Project Consultant assigned to work with you can help identify these costs.
