MacLeland 2.4.1 for OS X - ReadMe April 25, 2006 *** Contents *** IMPORTANT Notes for version 2.4.1 Introduction Installation Requirements Installation Instructions Help, Other Documentation, etc. *** IMPORTANT Notes for version 2.4.1 *** MacLeland 2.4.1 is the newest version of MacLeland. It is exclusively for Mac OS X.4 (Tiger). It cannot be installed on earlier versions of OS X. Below are detailed notes about specific differences you should be aware of: Wherever possible the developers have leveraged the existing Kerberos for Macintosh (KFM) that is provided by MIT under contract to Apple Computer and is included with OS X.4 (Tiger). - The MacLeland login dialog box is different. It is not specifically designed for MacLeland but is a generic Macintosh kerberos login dialog box. Important differences that may cause initial puzzlement or confusion are: - No Stanford Quad image with MacLeland title - instead, a logo featuring two 'tickets' and a generic application iconis displayed. - Slightly varying text in the dialog box, depending on what application or component invokes the login - "SUNet ID" prompt replaced by "Name" - the response is still the login form of the SUNet ID, however. - A drop-down button in the lower left corner provides additional options that are not generally useful nor recommended for use at Stanford. - MacLeland 2.4.1 does not work with fast user switching. MacLeland is unable to get control of the needed ports at the appropriate time when the switching takes place. You will see one or more dialog boxes describing the failure. If this is an problem for you, you should disable fast user switching by unchecking the "Enable fast user switching" option in the "Login Options" (at the bottom of the Accounts list on the left) of the Accounts panel of System Preferences. - The Change Password menu item now launches the default browser and takes the user to Stanfordyou.stanford.edu. There, the recommended password change mechanism can be used to change the user SUNetID password. *** Introduction *** MacLeland is a Desktop Agent for the Macintosh platform that provides Kerberos authentication and encryption. MacLeland may be used to securely connect via telnet session to the Leland UNIX infrastructure (e.g. Cardinal, Elaine, epic). MacLeland manages the acquisition of Kerberos credentials and integrates seamlessly with applications that natively support Kerberos like Eudora, Sundial and Apple Mail. By logging into MacLeland users can take advantage of the security of Kerberos authentication when checking mail or remotely connecting to the campus UNIX infrastructure. This README file describes how to install MacLeland. For pointers to more information about MacLeland, see "Help, Other Documentation, etc." at the end of this document. *** Installation Requirements *** To run MacLeland, your Macintosh needs the following: - approximately 25 megabytes of free disk space (only 15 megabytes if you choose not to install MacAFS; see below). - a network connection to the Internet or to SUNet directly. - a SUNet ID to login to MacLeland. For information, see the SUNetID web page: http://sunetid.stanford.edu/ Use the following table to determine the appropriate version of MacLeland for your system. If you reinstall or upgrade Mac OS X or Kerberos for Macintosh, you may also need to run the MacLeland installer again. You do not need to uninstall earlier versions of MacLeland to install the new one. See the Help section on "Installing MacLeland" for information about the usefulness of the old version and instructions for uninstalling it if you want to. Please follow all the instructions. In particular, be sure to restart your Macintosh at the end of this procedure. 1. The installer is distributed using a .dmg extension. When selected in the default browser it will download to the default download location. For most users this will be the desktop. 2. Double-click the MacLeland 2.4.1 installer program and follow the directions. You will need an Administrator account and password for the Mac. 3. At the end of the installation, you will be required to restart your Macintosh. If you choose NOT to restart at that time you must manually restart before MacLeland will function properly. 4. After restarting, in the right side of the menu bar you will see MacLeland's menu bar icon: a graphic depicting Hoover Tower and a building in the Quad. If you click on that icon, you will see the MacLeland command menu. That indicates the MacLeland installation was successful. 5. If you have any problems with the installation, check the "Installing MacLeland" and "Troubleshooting" sections of MacLeland's help documentation. Invoked with the Help command on the MacLeland menu, Help is set up as a web browser document; when you select the command, MacLeland will open your web browser, and open a browser window for MacLeland Help. You do not need to be connected to the network to read the help. *** Help, Other Documentation, etc. *** The Help command is available in the MacLeland menu.
