iPhone Configuration Instructions for ActiveSync

There are two ways to configure your iPhone Mail application to sync to your Stanford email account—using an ActiveSync connection or using a standard IMAP connection. An ActiveSync connection pulls in your calendar and contacts in addition to your email. An IMAP connection can sync email messages only.

The iPhone can sync email messages to any number of IMAP accounts but it can only sync to one ActiveSync (Exchange or Zimbra) account at a time.

These instructions configure the iPhone Mail application to use an ActiveSync connection for email, calendar, and contacts syncing. Instructions for configuring the Mail application to use IMAP are also available.

  1. From the Home screen go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  2. Select Add Account.
  3. Select the option for Microsoft Exchange.
  4. Enter the following:
    • Email: your address@stanford.edu
    • Username: your sunetid
    • Password: your sunetid password
    • Description: your address@stanford.edu should automatically fill in (you can change this if you like)
  5. Select Next.
  6. A new field for Server will appear. Enter your sunetid.pobox.stanford.edu
  7. Select Next. If you receive an error message indicating that account information could not be verified, just choose to Save the account anyway.
  8. Turn the options to "On" for the areas you'd like to sync (Mail, Contacts, Calendars).
  9. Select Done.
  10. Your account will now appear in the Mail, Contacts, Calendars section. Select it to view the Settings.
  11. Tap Account Info.
  12. Scroll down and verify that Use SSL is turned ON.
  13. Important: Adjust the Mail days to sync (default is 3) according to your preferences. Most users will want to change this setting, as this default would mean only messages received in the last three days would appear in any of your folders.

Your iPhone should automatically send and receive mail from your Zimbra account as well as sync to the Zimbra Address Book and Calendar.

Re-syncing the calendar

On occasion it may be necessary to clear the data from the iPhone calendar application and do a fresh, complete sync. Use the following procedure:

  1. From the Home screen go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  2. Select your Stanford account.
  3. Set the option to sync calendar to Off.
  4. Return to the Home screen and go to the Calendar application. Verify that the calendar is empty.
  5. Return to the Home screen and go back to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  6. Select your Stanford account.
  7. Set the option to sync calendar data to On.
  8. Go back to the Home screen and go to the Calendar application. The calendar will re-populate with data from the server. Note: the initial sync may take an hour or more.
