Configuring Filters in Eudora 6 (Windows)

These instructions apply to both POP and IMAP email accounts.

Note

You have the option of filtering or deleting spam using Webmail filtering. A Webmail filter creates filters on the server that are applied as the messages are delivered to your mailbox. This allows you to create filters in one place instead of defining them within each email program you use.

  1. First you need to create a mailbox in which to transfer your filtered messages.

    • For a POP account: In the Mailbox window, right-click on the Eudora mailbox. In the pop-up menu, click New. Name the new mailbox Filtered Spam and click OK.

    • For an IMAP email account: In the Mailbox window, right-click on the IMAP Inbox mailbox. In the pop-up menu, click New. Name the new mailbox Filtered Spam and click OK.

Note: If you are using Eudora's built-in spam filter and want to have all of your spam filtered into one mailbox, name the new mailbox Junk.

  2. On the Tools menu, click Filters.

  3. In the Filters window, click the New button to create a new filter.

  4. Define the filter as follows:
    • Check the boxes for Incoming and Manual.
This automatically filters your incoming messages and lets you invoke the filter from the Special menu by choosing Filter Messages.

    • For Header, choose Subject.

    • In the Subject contains box, type [SPAM:

    • In the first box in the Action area, choose Transfer To.

    • Click the button to the right of the Transfer To box and choose the Filtered Spam (or Junk) mailbox. Incoming messages with [SPAM: in the subject line will be transferred to this mailbox.

Note: Your incoming messages go through Eudora's junk filter, if you have it turned on, before going through any other filters that you may have set up. If you have multiple filters configured, you will probably want the spam filter to be applied first. The filter title pane displays the filters you have configured. Filters are applied according to their order from top to bottom. Click the spam filter and drag it to the top of the list.

  5. On the File menu, click Save to save your changes and then close the Filters window.

Be sure to review the contents of your Filtered Spam mailbox for falsely labeled mail. Delete the contents of your Filtered Spam mailbox periodically to avoid filling your computer's hardrive.
