Configuring Spam Filters in Mac OS X Mail

Note for IMAP Users

The following instructions can be used to set Mac OS X Mail to filer messages tagged as spam to another folder. Alternatively, IMAP users may prefer to define spam filters using Webmail. Doing so creates filters on the server where they will be applied as the messages are delivered to your mailbox. This lets you create filters in one place instead of defining them within each email program you use.

  1. First create a mailbox to hold messages marked as spam. From the Mailbox menu, click New Mailbox. and type the name of the mailbox you wish to create (for example, "Spam").

    create new mailbox

Note: POP users will leave the Location field set at On my Mac. IMAP users should select their IMAP account.

  2. Go to the Mail menu and click Preferences. Click Rules, located on the right side of the tool bar.

    Rules dialog box

  3. Click the Add Rule button and enter the following information:
    • Description: Enter a name for this rule.
    • If any of the following conditions are met:
      Subject Begins with [SPAM:
    • Perform the following actions:
      Move Message to mailbox Spam
(or any other name you used when creating your new mailbox in step 1)

    make a rule screenshot

  4. Click OK to save the Rule and close the Preferences window. Your new rule should now be active and messages tagged by our spam filter should appear in your spam mailbox.
