Configuring Filters in Thunderbird for Macintosh

These instructions apply to both POP and IMAP email accounts.

Note for IMAP Users

The following instructions can be used to set Thunderbird to filer messages tagged as spam to another folder. Alternatively, IMAP users may prefer to define spam filters using Webmail. Doing so creates filters on the server where they will be applied as the me ssages are delivered to your mailbox. This lets you create filters in one place instead of defining them within each email program you use.

  1. Start Thunderbird.

  2. If you don't already have a folder to hold messages marked as spam, create one now. On the File menu, point to New and then click Folder. Type the name of the folder you wish to create (for example, Spam).

  3. On the Tools menu, click Message Filters.

  4. When the Message Filters dialog box is displayed, click New.

  5. Give the filter a name and then enter the following information:
    • For incoming messages:
      • Click Match all of the following.
      • In the first box, select Subject.
      • In the second box, select contains.
      • In the third box, type [SPAM:
    • Perform these actions:
      • In the first box, select Move Message to
      • In the second box, select the folder where you want your filtered email to be stored.

  6. Click OK to close the dialog box.

  7. The Message Filters dialog box will be displayed. Make sure that Enabled is checked so that the filter is run automatically on new messages.

    Note: If you have multiple filters, you will probably want the spam filter to run first. Filters are run according to their order from top to bottom. Select the spam filter and then click Move Up to move the spam filter to the top of the list.
