Spam Filtering Frequently Asked Questions
- What if I don't want my email checked for spam?
- Currently it is not possible to opt-out of the spam tagging system. This is an enhancement that we will investigate implementing in the future.
- How do I decipher the evaluation code?
- Spam has certain common traits that can be detected by the spam filter. The evaluation code attached to each email lists the traits that applied to that particular email. For example, spammers often write their Subject: headings in capital letters. If you see "SUBJ_ALL_CAPS" in the evaluation code, it means the system noticed this and considered it when deciding if the email was spam. The same is true when you see "BIG_FONT" or "CLICK_HERE_LINK" in the evaluation code: the system is noting and reporting elements in the message that are commonly seen in spam as well. When you see "RCVD_IN_<name of site> it means the email is almost certainly spam because it was detected by a spam filtering system elsewhere and was reported to one of many web sites that monitor spam and track the various places spam comes from. If you check the evaluation code you'll soon get a feel for what constitutes spam.
- I've got Outlook 2000 and can't see headers ... how do I look at the evaluation code?
- Right click on the (highlighted) message you want to look at. Select "Options". The headers for your message are in the "Internet Headers" pane.
