UNIX account disk space
Overview
Your Stanford UNIX account comes with 1 GB of AFS disk space for storing web pages, text files, computer programs, and other forms of electronic information. Each allotment of disk space is referred to as disk "quota." If you use all 1 GB, your account may "break." That is, you can't put any more files inside or save a file you've edited because there's no room. Check your AFS disk quota often. Clean out your disk space if necessary, or request more disk space.
More about checking quota
To show how much quota you have for your account and how much you've used, type:
lelandquota
at the Stanford UNIX command prompt. If you are very near the limit of your quota, you may not be able to read your mail using Pine or another Unix-based mail reader. It is generally a good idea to not run above 90% of your quota. The "MAIL" quota listed is your quota on the mail servers, which stores your unread mail if you use a POP-based mail client (which includes most Unix-based mail clients in the Stanford UNIX systems environment), or holds all of your mail if you use an IMAP-based mail client.
The AFS command for checking the quota of a specific "volume" is:
fs listquotaor
fs lqIf you were to type this command while in your home directory you would receive quota information similar to typing "lelandquota". The "fs lq" command is useful for checking the quota usage of a group, department, or class directory.
Reducing your disk usage
If your disk space fills up with too many files in your account, or too many email messages stored, you may need to manually select specific files to delete. Check here to learn how to clear out your AFS disk space; or check here to clear out your email disk space.
Requesting more disk quota
- For your own Stanford UNIX account.
- If you need more quota for unsponsored research and have a faculty sponsor, you may request additional quota.
- For a group or departmental directory
- If you manage a directory in /afs/ir/dept/, /afs/ir/data/ or /afs/ir/group/, please file a HelpSU ticket.
- For a class directory.
- If you are teaching a class that has a directory in /afs/ir/class/ and need more disk space, send mail to courses@stanford.edu requesting more space.
