INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES

Directory

Overview

On April 2nd, 2003, ITSS went production with OpenLDAP Directory Servers.

As a part of the rollout of OpenLDAP, we will be introducing new services. Those include:

  • PosixAccount on LDAP Cabability, which was released as of April 2nd, 2003.
  • Eventual support for anonymous lookups via Email clients for Stanford World visible information.

Why we upgraded:

  • The Netscape directory software reached its operational capacity, and became unreliable in its ability to stay up at production quality levels.

  • Our new directory technology supports Kerberos V, while Netscape supported only Kerberos IV. ITSS is currently phasing out Kerberos IV.

  • Our new directory technology will eventually allow us to offer new features to the Stanford community such as:
Email client access to the LDAP Directory for client applications like Eudora to look up email addresses for those who mark records public in Stanford. You off campus. This will not be supported until necessary updates to Stanford. You have been made. It may never be supported for Microsoft Outlook, as Microsoft unfortunately made it rely upon non-LDAP standard attributes.

  • Ability to use the central LDAP Directory data to access account and name information for desktop/cluster logon purposes. The Libraries went live with this feature in Summer, 2003 with their MAC OSX Cluster.
