Applications and Services
On this page:
The Stanford ID Card is more than a simple photo ID. It also provides electronic access to a variety of facilities and services around campus.
Add money to the StanfordCardPlan, which is a prepaid expense plan, and you can then use your Stanford Card to purchase goods and services such as meals, sundries, and copying. The money you add to your card does not expire.
The StanfordCardPlan, and all of the applications and services described below, is also available to Courtesy Card holders. However, Courtesy Card door access is limited to public facilities such as libraries and gyms.
The StanfordCardPlan should not be confused with the Cardinal Dollars plan for student meals.
Cardinal Dollars are prepaid dining dollars used only at Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) dining locations, and retail locations. Please check the Stanford Dining website for locations.
Access Control
Many departments and facilities on campus utilize card readers on doors, turnstiles, and elevators to control access to buildings and rooms. Card readers include the familiar "swipe" type as well as proximity readers.
All newly-issued ID cards contain a special sensor that can be picked up by a proximity reader at a distance of up to 12 inches, providing faster access and meeting the needs of disabled students, faculty, and staff. And, since physical contact between the cards and the reader is eliminated, cards have a longer life span and readers require less maintenance.
Access can be restricted by day of the week and time of day, and can be set up to provide access on an individual basis, or by department or class list.
Privileges/entitlement
- The Stanford ID Card doubles as your library card. You must present your Stanford ID Card when checking out books.
- Vaden Health Center uses the Stanford Card to verify health plan service levels. StanfordCardPlan participants can also use the card to pay for prescriptions at the Health Center.
Residence hall meals
- When you live on campus in a University-managed residence, your Stanford ID Card doubles as your Dining Card.
- You can supplement the number of meals allotted under your dining plan with the purchase of optional Cardinal Dollars. Cardinal Dollars can only be used in residence dining facilities, and are separate from the StanfordCardPlan dollars. Unlike StanfordCardPlan dollars, however, Cardinal Dollars expire at the end of the regular academic year.
- See the Dining Services Meal Plan Web page for more information on Cardinal Dollars and meal plan options.
