Backup and Recovery Service (BaRS)

6/30/08. IT Services recommends that backups for Stanford Windows desktops and laptops use the Iron Mountain Connected service.

IT Services is in the early stages of retiring the BaRS backup service for Windows workstations and will not be accepting new nodes. The exception is 64-bit Windows systems as Iron Mountain's solution is not yet available.

Note: This "retirement" does not affect server backups. If you are requesting a server backup, please open an OrderIT ticket or, if this is for a 64-bit Windows workstation, please open a HelpSU ticket.

1/08/2007, BaRS and Leopard. BaRS now supports TSM on MAC OS X Leopard. The software can be downloaded by following the link to BaRS software & info (for system admins) on the left side of this page. If you have questions or if there are any problems installing the client, please open a HelpSU ticket for assistance.

10/17/2007, BaRS Support Update; Security Alert. A possible security issue has been identified in previous versions of the TSM Client for all platforms. New versions for all Clients are now available for download. We strongly recommend that all BaRS customers apply this update as soon as possible in order to avoid potential security problems.

09/19/2007, BaRS Mac Support Update: BaRS introduced support for the Intel based Mac in January 2007 with the release of the TSM 5.4.x client. This client supports Mac and PowerPC based systems running version 10.4.7 and higher.

The latest version includes support for MAC OS X version 10.4.10 and is now available for download from the BaRS website. Those with Mac OS 10.4.6 and earlier should either update to 10.4.7 or later, or run TSM 5.3.x.

BaRS is also currently working with Iron Mountain to test the Beta version of their "Connected" Mac client. Once tested and if approved, BaRS may offer the option of backing up Mac systems using either the Connected or TSM client.

If you have questions, want more information, or need assistance with installing the new Mac client, please open a HelpSU ticket.

The Information Technology Services Backup and Recovery Service (BaRS)* is a convenient, cost-effective way for Stanford faculty and staff to back up and recover crucial data on networked computers and servers. The BaRS service utilizes TSM software (Tivoli Storage Manager®, a product from IBM) to back up data over SUNet to a centralized, secure storage facility. TSM is available for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux desktops/laptops, as well as Windows, Macintosh, Unix, and Linux servers (support varies by platform).

TSM, once installed and configured, will automatically back up your system at a specified time each workday. If you accidentally overwrite or delete a file, you can recover the file yourself using the TSM desktop software. File recovery is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. See the BaRS Overview for more detailed information about the service.

While easy to use, BaRS can be complex to install and configure. A departmental system administrator or an IT Services consultant must perform the initial installation and set up. To subscribe to BaRS, contact your local system administrator or LNA or submit a HelpSU ticket; select Request Catgeory Billable Services; Request Item Backup and recovery service. Be sure to include as much information as possible in the comments field, e.g., number of systems to be backed up, location, etc.

Cost: Ranges from $8.25/month/user to $12/month/user. Additional charges apply over the base storage amount (TSM: $1.60 per GB over 3GB; Iron Mountain/Connected: $3 per GB over 10 GB).

*Note: IT Services does not install or support BaRS unless the computer is covered by IT Services Contract Support or OnCall Services.
