Software at Stanford Search Tool

Software at Stanford is an interactive search site where you can type in the name of a software product or use pull-down menus to search by name or location. Refined by whether you are a student, faculty, or staff, and whether you are purchasing for your department or personal use, the site’s search results include link(s) to the appropriate software provider's web site to learn more about the product and how to obtain it.

Essential Stanford Software

Essential Stanford Software is a collection of applications that will help you plug into the Stanford University Network (SUNet) and gain access to Stanford's computing services. ESS includes applications to keep your password secure, protect against computer viruses, send and read email, browse the web, and exchange files.

Purchasing software for Stanford-owned machines
Licensed software

The IT Services Software Licensing group negotiates and manages software licensing University-wide. The groups web site provides an extensive list of available software. If you don't find what you need on the list, staff will help you find the best alternative source.

Campus Wide Agreement (CWA)

A number of Windows and MacOS software packages (e.g., Adobe, FileMaker, and Microsoft Office products) are available for departments to purchase directly through Procurement's Campus Wide Agreement program.

Purchasing software for personally owned machines

Students who need to purchase popular Microsoft and Adobe products should check out IT Services' available software list (look for the software titles for students). For all other student, faculty, and staff personal purchases, the the Stanford Bookstore, Apple, and Dell provide discounts on selected software for Stanford affiliates.

Pubsw (Leland Systems) software

The pubsw software tree contains over 500 free and site-licensed software packages installed in AFS for multiple different versions of UNIX and available to any machine at Stanford running a supported version of UNIX and mounting AFS. This is also the software tree used by all the Sweet Hall cluster machines.

Patent, Copyright, and Distribution Issues for Developers

Royalty-Free or Cost Reimbursement Basis: Patentable software is subject to the University's Patent Policy. To protect copyright, developers may use "shrink-wrap" or "click-wrap" agreements.

Royalty-Bearing or Commercial Distribution: Developers should disclose the software to the Office of Technology Licensing.
