| The temperance and the tee-totaler movements, while occurring at similar times, varied in significant ways. The most obvious difference was that temperance reformers wished to limit consumption of spirits in favor of lower alcohol drinks, while teetotalers wished to eliminate the consumption of all alcoholic beverages. This tract reflects the temperance standpoint. Pale ale has a relatively low alcohol content, and was thus pushed by many publicans (such as Allsop's) as a pro-temperance alternative. |
