Perceiving Foreigners: Punch Cartoon

| This popular Punch cartoon reveals one of the inherent tensions of the Great Exhibition between nationalism and internationalism. The model British family is seen here, taking in the many exotic sights of the exhibition. The foreigners inside, however, seem to be caged in, displayed as if animals in a zoo. Their wild dancing stands in marked contrast to the reserved, civilized temperament of the British family. |
