The Royal Commission

The Royal Commission charged with the planning of the exhibition represented a wide spectrum of interests within British society. Gathered here around Prince Albert, most were liberal thinkers, supporters of free trade and and advocates for domestic reform. The overall character of the exhibition, and especially its spirit of pacifist internationalism, took much of its shape from these planners.
