Perceiving Foreigners: Chinese at the Great Exhibition

As seen in the "Cannibal Islanders" example, foreigners at the Great Exhibition were often viewed with mistrust and contempt. This view is reinforced in the fictional Authentic Account of the Chinese Commission, where the Chinese are caricatured with disproportioned, animal-like features, and described as savage.
