Bill Brandt's Photographyby Olivia LauThe Cantor Center for the Visual
Arts at Stanford University is fortunate to own 25 original photographs
by Bill Brandt, one of the greatest British photographers of the 20th
century. This virtual exhibition analyses examples of Brandts
work during the 1930s, drawn from the collection. Due to various copyright
considerations and technical difficulties, the images which follow are
not the Cantor Centers original prints, but drawn from Brandts
last book, The Shadow of Light (1966). The captions include information
for each image drawn from the museums database, including the
accession number, for further reference. The essay which follows examines
photographs in context of English society during the late 1930s.
