--- FAQ ---

  • Where is the Wushu practice location?
The practice location is at the Arrillaga Center For Sports and Recreation, on the first floor basketball courts. It is a new sports center built to meet the needs of students. The building is directly north of the Burnham and Ford Centers. Be sure not to confuse it with the Arrillaga Family Sports Center, which is a different building.
  • How do I get on the Stanford Wushu mailing list?
Send email to stanford_wushu-subscribe@lists.stanford.edu from your email account with the words subscribe stanford_wushu in the body (not the subject) of the message.
Before subscribing to the Stanford Wushu mailing list, we should first first inform you that our mailing list is used primarily for internal club business and announcements. It has generally not been used as an overall forum for wushu or other martial arts discussion, nor as a directory for martial arts resources or advertising. Therefore, unless you are interested in joining our classes, the list will only send you messages in which you will likely have no interest.
  • What do I wear to class?
Comfortable pants and a t-shirt (Stanford Wushu t-shirt if you have one). Tie long hair back. You must wear shoes. Light shoes such as keds, badminton shoes, or martial arts shoes work best. They must not leave marks on the floor. It's better to have a pair of shoes that you only use for wushu.
  • How do I address the instructors?
Wong Laoshi and Zhang Laoshi. Laoshi means "teacher" in Chinese. Wong Laoshi teaches on Fridays, and Zhang Laoshi teaches on Mondays.
  • Can I get course credit at Stanford for taking wushu?
Yes! You can sign up for ATHLETIC 181M for 1 unit of credit. Credit will be given based on attendance at Monday and Friday practices. If you are still interested receiving course credit for martial arts in general, there is an Introduction to Martial Arts class put on by SMAP which teaches a wide range of martial arts for one to two weeks each, including a section on Wushu taught by our club.
  • When do I get to start learning weapons?
Before a student can begin learning weapons, he or she must have a firm grasp of the basics; every new movement builds on the basic foundations and principles of what has been learned previously. At almost any martial arts school, only students of intermediate level and higher learn weapons. Usually one year is the absolute minimum to reach this level of ability. But don't despair, wushu empty hand sets are awesome and often preferred by many wushu practitioners.
  • Can I go to competitions?
Of course, we encourage all of club members of all skill levels to compete. We do our best to keep members up to date on local competitions and students of all levels are encouraged to compete.
  • How do I count to ten in Mandarin Chinese?
yi, er, san, si, wu, liu, qi, ba, jiu, shi
  • Why am I so sore?
We all are. Take care to stretch out before and after class and also on days when you don't work out. Most people will be very sore, especially after the first few classes. But it does get better over time.
